Published in Nature Materials

Research shows promise for organic photovoltaic solar cells as alternative energy source

(Roanoke, VA, February 11, 2009) Luna Innovations Incorporated (NASDAQ:LUNA) announces the solar cell research of scientists Dr. Claudia Cardona and Dr. Martin Drees has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Materials. The paper titled "Endohedral fullerenes for organic photovoltaic devices" presents a unique approach to enhance flexible, plastic solar cells, also known as organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells, by modifying the acceptor material rather than the donor material. The paper, which is co-authored by researchers from Georgetown University, University of California at Santa Barbara, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, describes how the efficiency improvement was achieved through the use of Luna’s carbon nanomaterials.

NextGen Aeronautics, Inc.

A California-based company will soon design, develop and build unmanned aircraft vehicles in Danville. NextGen Aeronautics is the newest tenant at the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research. The company was interested in opening an East Coast office and U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, R-5th, encouraged officials to look at Danville.

At an announcement that drew hundreds of interested residents Thursday, NextGen representatives and Goode said the company chose Danville because of other high-tech programs already at the Institute, including the Joint Unmanned Systems Test, Experimentation and Research (JOUSTER) program, and the Advanced and Applied Polymer Processing Institute (AAPPI).

IALR Receives $191,593 Grant for Nanoscience Training for Teachers

Danville - The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) has received a $191,593 Congressionally-directed grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support professional development opportunities for area teachers in the field of nanotechnology. The grant, "NanoScIEnce (NanoScience Instruction for Educators): It's No Small Thing" provides funding for IALR to coordinate nanotechnology-themed workshops, seminars, summer academies, and a multi-state conference to train teachers as "best practice" experts so that their K-12 students are exposed to the emerging science of nanotechnology .

Luna Innovations' Electronics used in Successful Demonstration Flight Test of Missile Defense Interceptors

ROANOKE, Va., Jul 17, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Luna Innovations' (NASDAQ:LUNA) multi-year program with the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) passed a major development milestone with the announcement from MDA Director Lieutenant General Henry "Trey" Obering of the successful technology-demonstration flight test from the NASA Wallops Flights Facility, Virginia. This exercise, identified as the Next Generation Sensor Producibility flight test (NGSP-01), occurred on June 26, 2008 at 3:57 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time and successfully demonstrated the performance of emerging sensor technologies, materials, and designs that offer improvements for next-generation missile defense interceptors, or "kill vehicles".

Luna Awarded $3.9M for Nanotechnology Applications in Medicine and Alternative Energy for Defense

Diagnostics, Therapeutics and Organic Solar Cell Research Contract with the Air Force Research Laboratory

ROANOKE, Va. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- June 19, 2008 -- Luna Innovations Incorporated (NASDAQ:LUNA) has been awarded a $3.9 million subcontract, from General Dynamics Information Technology in support of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to continue work improving the performance of nanomaterials for military applications. In this program, Luna's product development team will evaluate prototypes using their exclusive nanomaterials applied to real-world conditions. Demonstrations of the commercial viability of proposed nanotechnologies will include diagnostics and therapeutics for military medicine and alternative energy solutions using organic solar cells.
